What is Research?

Posted by: lhisham on: September 13, 2009

I’m going to start my blog by first describing what is research and what it means to me:

Research is an essential tool in the world of writing. Research allows you to find out the different angles present in one case, to compare different views, to uncover the various possibilities in any given topic. In short, research is the art of decoding a combination of comparative study, scientific facts, opinions, assumptions, etc. and untangles that mess of information to produce a coherent outcome, or metaphorically, a single thread of information, whole in and of itself. Research is usually the product of more research so the intricate way in which research is integrated into our lives cannot be denied.

As a Psychology major, research probably more important to me than most; as psychology tends to base most of its findings on extensive research (in its diverse forms) to produce what can be later relied upon as a “Pattern of Behavior” , a “Characteristic” or simply, a “disease”. The very process of identifying something as unusual or as a disease requires a fair amount of draining research to prove many things such as it not being an individual case, that it is disruptive to the person’s everyday life, etc. Whether it is statistical analysis or just a thorough of different theories explaining one single phenomenon, research is definitely key to the field of Psychology.

Though research may not necessarily produce other research or papers, it is definitely important as a means through which to acquire knowledge that may be highly valuable to us.
